CELEBRATION OF JOE’S LIFE SERVICE: 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 1, 2014 at the funeral home.  Bro Phil Boyd officiating with burial in the Prairie Cemetery, Oblong Township.  Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by Oblong American Legion Post #219.

Joseph Dwain “Joe” Smith, 72, of rural Oblong, Il., passed away at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, July 26, 2014 at St. Mary’s Medical Center Evansville, IN following a battle with lung cancer.

Born in Winston County, Mississippi, he was the son of Meredith Jones Smith and Mabeline (Livingston) Smith.  On July 26, 1968 he married Linda Sue Randolph and she preceded him in death on April 15, 2013.

Joe served his country in the United States Army having been stationed in Korea and Germany; retired from Marathon Production, North End, having originally started work at Marathon with the Maraflood Project.  He was later employed at Hershey Chocolate Robinson as a fork lift driver; and was a member of the Oblong American Legion Post #219.

Survivors include his two sons: Joe Jr. and Terri Smith of Sullivan, In.; and George and Daphne Smith of Princeton, IN; a daughter, Kathleen “Kathy” Smith, Oblong, IL; seven grandchildren: Brandi and Chris Stephenson, Justin White, all of Oblong, IL; Tasha Adams, Charleston, IL.; Ethan Smith, Princeton, IN.; Ashley and Robby Kinney, St. Elmo, IL; Johnathan Smith and Krystle Bolen, both of Sullivan, IL; five great-grandchildren: Aydin Musgrave and Lyam Stephenson, both of Oblong, IL; Mackenzie and Myiah Stephenson, both of Annapolis, IL; Riley Kinney, St. Elmo, IL; two brothers Mike Smith and Billy Ray Smith, both of Chicago, Il; three sisters: Mary Frances Thorn,  Chicago, IL; Carolyn Joyce Livingston, Orlando, Fl.; and Willie Fay St. Marie, Indianapolis, In.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Linda and one brother Clinton Dale Smith.
